The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling was the first book series I truly connected to. Since fourth grade, the series has stood the test of time and continued to be my favorite series. (Ps. I'm a Slytherin)

This beautiful, gut-wrenching novel by Ruta Sepetys was my first Historical Fiction novel. I have since read this book at least five times. Sepetys's second novel, Salt to the Sea is also a wonderful Historical Fiction which I would highly recommend.

Beloved, by Toni Morrison is an incredibly beautiful, yet difficult novel. The novel is packed with challenging themes and scenes, yet Toni Morrison crafts her words beautifully. This is a book which I would love to teach in a future class.

Sue Monk Kidd's novel is a wonderful coming of age story. Set in 1964, South Carolina, the novel deals with difficult themes of racism, loss, betrayal, and mental illness. This book is one I would highly recommend and would love to teach in future classes.
